Columba

Columba (7 December 521 – 9 June 597) was an Irish abbot and missionary evangelist credited with
spreading Christianity in Scotland.

Odhrán

Odhrán was a companion of Saint Columba in Iona, and the first Christian to be buried on the island.
St. Odhrán’s feast day is on 27 October.

Wildlife

St Conan’s Escape is embedded in the local environment home, to an abundance of feathered and furred wildlife. The Sea Eagle is an increasing visitor from the Isle of Mull. This magnificent bird has a wingspan of up to 2.5m and can be identified not just from its size but from pale head, white, wedge-shaped tail and its broad rectangular wings. Loch Awe is also home to several Golden Eagle and a dozen Osprey nests. Pine Martens, Otter and Red Squirrel populations are on the rise in the vicinity of the escape

Marsh Fritillary

The area in and around St Conan’s Escape hosts one of Britain’s rarest butterflies; the Marsh Fritillary. Habitat decline has meant the Marsh Fritillary has dwindled to just 35 colonies in Scotland. Guests staying in May, June or July will have the chance to see one of the UK’s most elusive butterfly.

Sea Eagle
